Caged

Caged
by Renee Lishka

When you put a tiger in a cage

It eventually loses its stripes

It no longer roars for its prey in the night

It longs for the wild but settles for the safe

It yearns for the freedom

Its heart will forever ache

When you put a bird in a cage

The wings will often bend

Their song forever mournful

Their cry will never end

For a bird to never fly

That’s the worst way for it to die

When you put your heart in a cage

It eventually no longer sings

It forgets that once upon a time

The heart could sour with its wings

The heart forgets to roar

The stripes will eventually fade

Do yourself a favor

Release your heart from within its cage
